People was arguing over who would win a Quidditch match between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. The voice rang loudly throughout the Gryffindor Common Room. If someone wasn't in on the conversation then they were sitting away from the huge group watching. There was one Gryffindor 6th year student wasn't doing either. The brown bag next to the couch was picked up and swung onto his shoulder as he stood up. Days like this he hated when Quidditch matches were coming up.
Barnabas O'Brien stood only 5'5 and had a slender build. His brown hair hung loosely as he walked out of the entrance to the Common Room. The voices followed him out until the Fat Lady closed. He shook his head and let out a sigh of relief. The only thing he could hear right now were portraits talking amongst themselves. He pulled the bag up onto his shoulder again before he made his way down the stairs to finally get down to the courtyard. A smile slowly formed on his face as he took in the bright blue skies and fresh autumn breeze. It was a lovely day and he was determined to enjoy it.
Only he would walk around with his bag on his shoulder on a Saturday. The reason for that was, he had essays to do and he would rather get them done sooner rather than later. He ran a hand through his brown hair and walked out into the courtyard. Finding a nice patch of green grass, Barny set down his bag before plopping down ungracefully. The blond haired Gryffindor didn't care how he appeared to others. His family wasn't rich nor were they lower on the money tree. His family always got by with enough money to pay for new school supplies and still have money left over.
His blue eyes closed when the breeze brushed against his skin. Barny smiled softly and took a deep breath. Days like these he loved being outside for. Even some days he would come out when it was storming. He couldn't remember how many times he went to the Mediwitch for flu or something along those lines. His housemates thought he was an odd one. It always seemed like every house had that one person that didn't really fit in with the rest of them. Barny just so happened to be Gryffindor's. Not that he minded honestly. He couldn't see himself as a popular guy. They were most likely the 'jocks' of the Wizarding school.
People often would tell him that he was too feminine to play sports. There was never any corrections to it. Barny knew he was too feminine. His mother never had any girls so it was Barny would she spent her time with the most. His older brother and younger brother was too busy out riding a broom or doing things with their father. The brown haired wizard would much rather be inside helping his mother cook or clean.

Pascha Fang was a unique case.
For someone that grew up in a home dominated by sports talks, of betting wages, Pascha had almost zero care for being involved with such proceedings. Sure, Quidditch was cool and fun to watch. He had a few friends that played, and every once in awhile they would ask for the boy to help them practice when teammates or other qualified members weren't around to play. That was about as far as the fun went for him. In the end, it was simply too physical for the fragile Asian boy. His parents would not be happy to see him when break came around if he was in a sling. No, they would most likely add to the injuries themselves.
So it was no surprise then, that when the talks of Quidditch in Gryffindor Commons began that the boy was quick to exit. It wasn't so much that he didn't care, although the discussion was in fact about houses other than Gryffindor, but more so about the fact that it was loud. A real ruckus of unnecessary proportions. There were OWL's coming up soon, along with the daily demands of classes that he needed to tend to, and the common room wasn't going to be a place where he could think. Maybe he would go to the courtyard? No, that was probably cramped to.
And yet it wasn't. In the midst of all his internal thinking, he had subconsciously made his way to the courtyard. There were a few people around, mostly youth and mostly those of other houses, but Pascha was able to spot one person that he did recognize. Bert Cromwell? No, that wasn't him. Brett Chauncey? No, that wasn't him either. Pascha found that he was glaring at the boy in Gryffindor robes, trying as he might to visualize the boys correct name. They were both 6th years, and they had multiple classes together, but the name of the dashing fellow continued to elude him.
This is getting old.
"Barnabas?" Pascha tilted his head, putting his right palm to the back of his head and blushing the slightest shade of pink. "I'm sorry if I get your name wrong, but I knew you looked familiar... Look familiar. Was the common room too loud for you, too?" Pascha looked down, kicking at the grass beneath them. "I like Quidditch, don't get me wrong, I just don't see the need to get so heated when talking about it..."
Smooth, Pascha. Real smooth.

The only person that would actually come up to him during the day would be his little brother Keaton. His older brother was already out of Hogwarts so he only had one person to talk to him. Although he and his older brother never had a good relationship, his big brother always made sure that no one bothered Barny. His little brother was sorted into the Ravenclaw house so it left the brown haired boy alone in the Lion's Den. They used to meet up every weekend and Barny would help Keaton study but since Keaton started to play Quidditch, he had his own group of friends that he was always around. They still met up but it was late almost to curfew and only on Sundays.
It wasn't that he didn't want any friends, it seemed that cliques and groups were already forming by the time he got on the train. He rode all the way to Hogwarts with his older brother and his friends. The whole ride, he tuned them out as he read a book. That's how a lot of people would find him when people in their groups were talking. Barny did try once to make friends but they found him too odd to keep him around. Ever since that day, the brown haired boy decided it wasn't worth it. If someone came around that would want to be his friend then he would love to have at least one. But when it came down to him going up to someone to try to strike up a friendship, it wasn't going to happen.
He opened his blue eyes and looked around before reaching into his bag to pull out his Potions book. That was when he heard someone say his name. His eyes looked at the beautiful boy standing there in shock. Someone actually knew his name? That was something different.
The other boy started to ramble and his eyes blinked a few times when he realized that he should really stop him. "Yeah..uh..you got it right. But you can call me Barny." He said with a nervous smile. Hearing the boy ramble again, he couldn't help but let out a laugh that sounded more like a giggle. "It was loud. Too loud in there." He agreed with him.
The boy tilted his head and narrowed his eyes as he looked at the boy standing. Barny knew his name. Really, he did. "Your name is, P-Pascha?" He stumbled over the name a little hoping that he said it right. His voice had an Irish accent to it.

Pascha wasn't typically the one to make conversation, but today had not been the typical day. Things were different from the get-go, starting with an owl flying through the window of the 6th year dormitories and ending with Pascha tumbling down the staircase. Someone, that someone being Pascha, had went to sleep the night before without closing the window beside his bed. Getting the owl out of the dorms hadn't been too difficult, it actually belonged to one of the students in the dorms, but the damage to everyones books and robes was still done. This had lead to a lot of unhappy people, and also to a wary Pascha.
It abruptly ended with Pascha taking quite a tumble down the stairs in a rush to get away from his enraged peers.
"Hmm? Oh yes, my name is Pascha." Pascha grinned at Barny, relieved to see that he wasn't the only one with nerves. He leaned in over the boy just a tad, trying to see which book his was studying from. "Doing your Potions work? I don't know that I even want to attempt that right now..."
Pascha was the typical student. Typical in the fact that he had subjects he enjoyed, and then the subjects that he hated. Ancient Muggle Studies was the favorite of Pascha, followed closely by Transfigurations, while Herbology and Potions were his least favorite. Muggles Studies had always been his favorite, simply so because he was quite the professional muggle stalker. Interesting people they were. Transfigurations was interesting to the curious Asian youth, largely in fact due to the ability to always change one's appearance. Who wouldn't like that idea? Oh and Herbology and Potions? Meh. They required entirely too much thinking for a student who was more of the leisurely type.
"So... You're Irish?" Pascha offered the boy a nervous smile, making his way to the open seat the the boys left. Don't just stand there, creeper. "I don't mean to pry... Just making conversation. I think I picked up a little bit of your accent while you were talking earlier.

Barny wasn't exactly used to someone coming up to talk to him. Of course, first years would ask him a question if no one else wanted to answer but second year or above hardly spoke to him. It used to bother him but as the years went on, he ignored them as they ignored him. His dormmates would go out of their way to make sure they talk as if he wasn't even sitting there on his bed with his books open. Everyone, he just knew, questioned why he was in Gryffindor in the first place and not in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. The boy looked like he didn't have a single brave bone in his body. He thought he was rather brave to just go to school.
A small smile graced his lips when he realized he got the name right. Barny watched the boy lean over to see what book he had in his hands. Nodding, he glanced at the book. "Figured if I could get it done now I wouldn't have to worry about it later like my dormmates usually do." He said softly as he stared down at his book.
Even though he was a Gryffindor, Potions was his favorite subject. To him, it was the most challenging and he liked having a challenge. Snape didn't like Gryffindors and no matter how much he did the work right or turned in rather good homework, it was never enough to get house points. Not that he really cared about house points. They were usually taken away by the trouble makers in his house anyways. So why try for points to only get them to get them taken away? Barny wasn't very good in Herbology. Charms and Transfiguration were tied for second and third place in his favorite subject list. His blue eyes went back to the boy and smiled once again. "Yes, I am." He said as he watched the boy sit down in the empty spot. Usually he would scoot over and keep his distance but he thought it'd be rude to scoot away from the boy that was talking to him. Barny shook his head. "No it's okay. Can't exactly hide my accent."

"You're quite a bit braver than me, then."
Pascha smiled to the other boy, shuddering at the thought of having to do his potions homework. It had been a while since Pascha had found someone worthy of carrying on conversation with, and yet here one was. How ironic should it be, that the boy he was speaking to had been underneath his nose all of this time. Both were shy, both clearly weren't the best at socializing, and they also shared the habit of being overlooked. Now, that's not to say that either of their lives were unproductive or invaluable, but the common theme appeared to be that boy boys had yet to find their purpose. It was in a school like Hogwarts however, that things like that were proven difficult to do. If there wasn't one person waiting to see you fail, then there were two. Friends are nice, but competition will always rear its ugly head in moments of truth. Everyone wants the spotlight, everyone wants the fame.
"There are a lot of Irish people here, but your accent is by far the most interesting." Pascha smiled to the boy, instantly understanding the magnitude of the words he'd just used. Oh crap, he's going to think I'm hitting on him. Smooth Pascha, smooth. "I mean, not that I... Oh, I don't know what I'm trying to say. I mean I do, but, maybe I don't. Would you like to take a walk with me when you're done with your p-potions work?"
Pascha wasn't typically one to stutter, but again this wasn't a typical day. Barnabas, or Barny as he liked to be called, was cute. There were cute boys at Hogwarts, but again he was the only one that actually spoke. He acknowledged the nervous Asian, which in turn made for more nerves. For those that knew Pascha, he was a bit of a hybrid character. Not just figuratively, but literally. His mother was a Chinese enchantress, his father a Russian warlock. His upbringing had not only been occasionally violent, but constantly educational, with the weight of the two differing cultures too much to bear at times. His father was ironically the easier of the two to please, although that certainly wasn't saying much. Both parents were determined to see him succeed, even if it meant living vicariously through the fragile boy.
